New Delhi: The All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Thursday confirmed that former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has passed away. Vajpayee breathed his last at 5:05 pm. One of India’s most charismatic leaders, Vajpayee died following the prolonged illness. He was 93.
In a statement, the AIIMS said: “It is with profound grief that we inform about the sad demise of former Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee at 5.05 pm.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the passing away of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee marks the end of an era and termed it as a “personal and irreplaceable” loss for him.
“India grieves the demise of our beloved Atal Ji. His passing away marks the end of an era. He lived for the nation and served it assiduously for decades. My thoughts are with his family, BJP Karyakartas and millions of admirers in this hour of sadness,” Modi tweeted.
“Atal Ji’s passing away is a personal and irreplaceable loss for me. I have countless fond memories with him,” Modi said.
It was Atal Ji’s exemplary leadership that set the foundations for a strong, prosperous and inclusive India in the 21st century. His futuristic policies across various sectors touched the lives of each and every citizen of India.

“It is with profound grief that we inform about the sad demise of former Prime Minister of India Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee at 5.05 pm,” the hospital said in a statement.
The BJP veteran was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on June 11 with a kidney tract infection, urinary tract infection, low urine output and chest congestion.
Vajpayee, who was admitted with infection in the kidney and the urinary tract and chest congestion, began to slip away from Tuesday evening. His condition remained critical for the next three days and he was put on life support.
The end came at 5:05 pm on Thursday, August 16.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited AIIMS again on Thursday — he had visited him on Wednesday evening — after the hospital statement in the morning said the leader had been put on life support.

10:20 pm: Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is critical and has been put on life support system after his health deteriorated in the last 24 hours, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi said in a statement on Wednesday night.
“Former Prime Minister Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee has been admitted for the last nine weeks at AIIMS. Unfortunately his condition has worsened over the last 24 hours. His condition is critical and he is on life support system,” Dr Aarti Vij said in a press release.
Cause of death
The diabetic patient was undergoing treatment at the AIIMS for a urinary tract infection, kidney tract infection, chest congestion, and low urine output. His condition worsened last evening with leaders belonging to various political parties making a beeline to the hospital to inquire about his health.
Vajpayee was prime minister for 13 days in mid-1996 as he was forced to tender his resignation ahead of the confidence vote for which he lacked the numbers. Vajpayee again became the PM in March 1998. However, his government fell 13 months later on the floor of the Lok Sabha. The BJP government headed by Vajpayee came back to power in 1999 and remained in power till 2014.
